FAQs

1. What should I know before writing to a prisoner?

    a. We suggest you use a P.O. Box instead of your home address. Some churches may allow mail sent to their address in place of yours.
    b. Keep your correspondence centered around general things in the beginning such as hobbies and special interests until you feel more comfortable with your pen pal.
    c. Always try to be positive and supportive to your new friend. Prison environments are often very negative and stressful. Remember you can make a tremendous impact on someone’s life for the better.
    d. As with all things in life, honesty is always the best policy. Be truthful, not judgmental and expect the same in return. Most inmates are very open about why they are in prison and detailed incarceration information can usually be found on their states’ Department of Corrections website.
    e. Don’t forget those special birthday and holiday cards!  Mail call is often the most important part of the day for someone incarcerated.
    f. Never give out personal information to someone you do not know, just as you wouldn’t normally.
    g. Be cautious of anyone asking for money or trying to promote any scams or solicitations. Inmates who are soliciting money are removed from the database immediately so please contact us immediately if there is an issue.

2. How can I find out more about my match?
Most inmates are very open and honest about why they are in prison.  Detailed incarceration information can usually be found on their states’ Department of Corrections website. You can also write or email directly the Prison Administration at the institution where the inmate is located. They can give you the most recent information and status of the inmate.

3. How do I find out more information about the inmate’s crime?
You can obtain full disclosure by contacting that state’s Department of Corrections. This information is all public record.

4. How old do I have to be to participate?
You must be at least 18 years of age or older to use our system.

5. What do I do if I have any other questions or run into a problem
with the person I am corresponding with?
